Aangenaam Linde! Ik ben Thistle. Ik spreek een klein, klein beetje Nederlands... but I'm very much out of practice. I'm certainly glad to have the chance to get started again, though! Also, here's something for Rich: Since he's interested in Dutch culture, here's the official website for one of the Netherlands' great 20th-century printmakers & graphic designers. Enjoy! http://www.mcescher.com/

Rich: You're very welcome! Missy Holland: Most of what (little ) I know about Dutch I learned from a few online sources (like this one ) & chatting with a Dutch-speaking friend I knew from another board.

OK, I have a question for Linde: What are the Dutch equivalents of each of the girls' names? (If it helps, I think someone once said that the English version of Máiréad is Margaret. ) Pronounciation-wise, I think spelling them using Dutch rules comes out something like this (feel free to correct me on any mistakes): Lisa — Liese Méav — Meev Órla — Oorle Chloë — Klooi Máiréad — Maareed Deirdre — Dierdre Hayley — Heilie or Hijlie Lynn — Linn (or no difference) Hayley in particular would probably appreciate knowing a Dutch-style spelling for her name, since she definitely seems to like learning about different languages (& because New Zealand has a large, historic Dutch community ).

I think you pretty much nailed it, Thistle Only Órlagh is rponounced the same, but with a different 'r', and Chloë is pronounced exactly the same

Thanks! Jammalot: True, Dutch (like its cousin English ) has a different kind of R from either the Irish "broad R" (like in Órlagh) or "slender R" (like in Máiréad), so I guess that would change across languages. Though I'm not exactly sure what you meant, you're likely right that the name "Chloë" — itself from Greek — is spelled the same everywhere. If you wanted to spell it like a native Dutch name, though, I think " Klooi" is at least pretty close. ...Unless it comes out like "cloy" or something ... ...& of course Klowie ("clovey") is out of the question...

Actually I don't think it would, because Klooi is actually a Dutch verb. It means something like 'to just do something utterly useles' So I don't think we'd name it like that. But on the other side it could be, since I'm not really an expert on native Dutch names.... bad me
