I started this because in September some lucky Forum Members will be going to County Wicklow to see Órlagh in concert.
They have not been to Wicklow before, and some have never been to Ireland.

So here is a taste of beautiful Wicklow in a series of 3 travel documentaries:

As you may know, Michael Jackson lived in Ireland for 5 months with his children.
He was happy there, spending most of the time on the estate he had rented in County Wicklow.
it is in an idyllic part of the Wicklow Mountains, surrounded by stunning scenery.
Many movies have used the setting including "Excalibur".
It was said that he wanted to buy Luggala, but was turned down.
He loved the fact they could walk through local towns and go shopping without being stared at.
They didn't need to cover their faces, they could eat ice cream and play like a normal family.
He found the local people very friendly and welcoming.
They respected his privacy and protected him from the media.

His beautiful Wicklow home was called.......Luggala.

Click on the list on the left, and look at the Photo Gallery:

There is a lodge where Michael lived, a Georgian house, and two cottages.
One cottage is The Gate House, the other is Mickey's Kitchen.
Check them out here, you could easily accommodate 5 or 6 people here for around $100 each per week!!!
Scroll down to the cottages:

Well you might have to wander over into Tipperary...if you want to see some good fiddlers at a session.... Cheesy

On the "Journey through Wicklow Part 2" at 5:33 on the tape, you can see the centre of Enniskerry (near Powerscourt)
with the Flags of Ireland, the European Union, and the USA.
At 6.03 on the same clip, there is a shot of Tinahely.

Here is a short clip showing the location of Luggala at 0.35 on the tape....
It is the white bit in the trees.....you can only see the house in Winter, it is concealed by trees in Summer.

It is called the "Guinness estate" because the Brewery family built the house and owned it for many years.
Many famous people have visited there because of the privacy and seclusion.

Here is "how to drive in Ireland" apparently made by an American.
Yes, as in the video you must be careful....a herd of sheep or cows could be just around the bend,
and they have priority......you must stop for them....pull off the road if possible.

If there is a farmer or a border collie present, they have control of the animals and you must wait
until they have moved along or into a pasture.
Border collies are quite capable of handling a herd without a human. As a young girl staying with Uncle Billy and Aunt Elsie,
I often offered to bring the cows home for milking.....Sam (Uncle Billy's Border Collie) made it very clear he didn't need me...
..he knew every cow and would make sure all were rounded up.....I was only there to open the gate.

Do NOT wander into any fenced or walled fields especially where baby animals are present,
or where there is a bull. If you can not tell the difference between a bull and a cow,
or a bull and a bullock (steer) you should not be wandering around in the countryside! Cheesy
The farmer may keep firearms to shoot foxes or any animal endangering his stock.

This is around Luggala again, in the depth of Winter.
Skiing and snowboarding, but there isn't a ski resort or ski lift, it's all natural.

I prefer Wicklow in the Summer, and skiing in Austria where you can ride to the top,
and have a nice big glass of glüwein waiting after your run!

Those guys seemed to enjoy it though.

We had a sign at work "if you cross the corral, you had better do it in 9 seconds because the bull can do it in 10.

I grew up in farming country and the Basque s  would bring the sheep thru and everyone knew that you stoppped and the herder was the one in control.

My neighbor ran 40 head of dairy cows and went out and got them to the barn every day for milking ( by hand) The property was surrounded by electrical fence , but he never ran into it. Why is that remarkable? He was blind.

The guy on the other side of us used milking machines and I think he ran a  couple of hundred head. One got thru the fence when I was 10 and I found out quickly that calves are all leg and kick when you want to put them where they don't want to be, like in their own field.

Beautiful!!  Thank you for the links to the Wicklow videos, Maggie!  They make me more inclined to possibly stay there rather than Dublin if I'm able to make the hoped for trip.  Too many ifs right now though.  We shall see!
