Title: Nollaig Casey - fiddler
Post by: Maggie on February 08, 2008, 03:27AM
The wonderful fiddler with the High Kings is Nollaig Casey. (I'm guessing she was born at Christmas  :D) Also known as Nollaig Ní Chathasaigh.

Visit her website and read the accolades:
http://www.nollaigcasey.com/

You have heard her play before, maybe many times. She is one of the stalwarts of Irish music.
She has worked a lot with her equally talented husband Arty McGlynn.....you've heard them play on several soundtracks including Waking Ned Devine. They have both worked with Van Morrison and many other big stars.

The Belfast Telegraph says of Arty:
"I first saw Arty play twenty years ago, he stunned the crowd that night with the brilliance of his guitar playing of traditional tunes and went on to become one of today's major figures on the Irish music scene. "

Check out Nollaig's resumé:
Nollaig has recorded and worked with Enya, Van Morrison, Sinéad O’Connor, Nanci Griffith, Ricky Skaggs, Rod Stewart, Emmy Lou Harris, Steve Earle, Dónal Lunny, Mary Black, Frances Black, Carlos Nuñez, Jim Rooney, Andy Irvine, Moving Hearts, The Indigo Girls, Spandau Ballet, Elvis Costello, Christy Moore, Liam O'Flynn, Dan ar Braz, Sharon Shannon, Maura O'Connell, Dick Gaughan, Paddy Keenan, Seán Keane, Liam Clancy & Tommy Makem, Máirtín O'Connor and her sister, the innovative and influential harper Máire Ní Chathasaigh, among many others.

She knows Máiréad of course, they have both worked with Dónal Lunny, and they know the same people, not the least of whom is David Downes! ;)

Thanks for the info Maggie. Very interesting link, although I have to wonder if it wouldn't have been easier to list the people she hasn't played with.

Thank you for that info, Maggie!  I wonder if Nollaig will be touring with The High Kings or if her presence was only for the filming.  My goodness, she's worked with a lot of great people!

I think she will probably tour with them.

I don't know who THK's guitarist is, but it would be good if her husband Arty could go too.

When I first saw the High Kings on here, I thought the fiddler was Cora Smyth.....they look alike from a distance.

Ireland has so many great fiddlers! :D

This is how they all start.....playing in competition at Comhaltas....

You can see Nollaig in the background on here, and you'll recognize the song:

Here she is, with Donal Lúnny again, in something different:

Correct me if I'm wrong but watching that last video I saw some people. Most notably for me was Kenny Jones from the Who, and the Edge from U2.
Maggie do you know the rest?"

I don't know Kenny Jones or the Edge. I guess Edge is the one with the bandanna on his head.
I know Donal Lunny, Ronan Browne,Tommy Hayes and Nollaig.

Donal often used to have Eoghan O'Neill on base guitar too, before Celtic Woman grabbed him.

In France, we know her as the fiddler in the red dress in Dan Ar Bras's L'Héritage des Celtes. An "interceltic" band in which Ray Fean has also played. I'm glad to see her again.

I have just ordered the CD of Dan Ar Braz & L'Heritage Des Celtes.

That tune on the YouTube clip is called "April the 3rd".

Here's a nice piece about Nollaig, featuring a clip of her playing with Máiréad and Donal Lúnny:

http://www.greenfireislands.com/artists_n_casey.htm

While on that page, click on "Musicians" scroll down to the list,
and choose "Laoise Kelly - Harpist.  Superb clip, but it's in a very dark pub!

Also look at the great and fabulous Donal Lúnny himself!
Also, the best Uilleann pipe playing I've heard.....
http://www.greenfireislands.com/artists_d_lunny.htm

(You can buy me a Guinness in De Burca's for that, Donal)

Funny.. she also performed with the Clancy Brothers at their reunion concert! I can't spot her in the video, but she is in the credits of this video..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nvl1TJyq5QU

and then, you can watch her do the same song along and a bit of a Clancy tribute with the High Kings in this one..

Arty McGlynn also apparently played guitar in the Clancy video

How do you pronounce her name?

According to a pretty good site I found (well, looks good to me, Maggie can probably let us know if it's as good as I think) ... her first name is pronounced "null + ig" and translates as Noel or Noelle.

I'm not certain of the pronunciation of the Gaelic version of Nollaig's last name, I'm afraid.

I was trying to figure this out as well and checked out several sites too. I wonder if Maggie could help us?  ;D

Yes, Nollaig Ní Chathasaigh is pronounced Nullig Nee Casey.

Nollaig means Christmas, as does Noel.

The ' Ní ' means Chathasaigh (Casey) is her maiden name.

Ahhh, thanks Maggie!

The "ath" portion of Chathasaigh was the part that was throwing me a bit.  I could see "Casey" coming from the rest, but didn't consider the "ath" might be effectiviely silent in pronunciation.

Nollaig blows me away with her skill!  She makes playing that fiddle look like child's play.  I sure hope she makes the trip this fall for the US tour. Would love to hear her in person & get the chance to let her know how much we love her.
Sept. will be here soon....cant wait!

Should see Shannon and Sean dancing around the living room when she play The Beggerman Jig. And hubby is completely enthralled with her playing...he has a fiddle and is trying to learn to play it - by ear (shakes head and holds hands over ears on some days) ;)

;D ;D  I can just picture that.  I talked with Mairead about an ole' gal like me learning the fiddle.  She said I should go for it!! But she giggled & said I should expect to cover my ears with the awful sounds I'd get in the beginning!  Timi, your comment reminded me of that lovely conversation with my other favorite fiddler!  Thanks!
