Thanks for posting the track list.
I am so glad to see The High Kings going back to their roots on a lot of these great songs.
The High Kings can not deny their heritage, being sons of the best performers of such songs.
I think they should certainly seek new material, and write new songs,
but always with a sprinkling of history in the program.  
The Clancy Brothers and The Dubliners were the masters of these songs, and NOBODY has come close,
until now. The High Kings have such songs in their blood.
Others may have tried it, (like Dropkick Murphys) but they can not match the emotion and passion.

Here's my explanation of the songs, I hope it will give a little background:

1. Rocky Road To Dublin
Irishmen have sought work in England for many generations, sailing across
on the ferry from Dublin to Liverpool.
This is the story of one young man from Tuam, County Galway.
His luck starts to run out in Dublin where he is robbed, and the locals mock his Connacht accent.
When he gets to Liverpool he encounters anti-Irish prejudice from the locals,
but he is joined by some other Galway lads who even up the score.

2. Finnegan's Wake
This shows how much fun can be had at an Irish Wake.
It also proves you can't be sure an Irishman is dead until he is six feet under, especially when whiskey is involved.
My Dad loved to sing this at family sessions.
Based on the book by James Joyce.

3. The Black Velvet Band:
Never trust any pretty young damsel you meet in a pub.
You might end up being deported to a jail in Tasmania for 7 years.

4. The Fields Of Athenry
A very sad song about the Potato Famine, A young man steals corn to feed his family, and gets deported to Australia.
 Ironically, the corn was imported from the USA by Charles Trevelyan, a British official who didn't do his research.
That type of corn was completely useless, as it could not be processed in Irish Mills.

5. Star Of the County Down
This shows how a man can be completely besotted by the smiling eyes of a passing colleen,
And spend the rest of his life looking for her.

6. Rare Auld Times
A sentimental song for anyone from Dublin.
It can reduce my friend to tears, remembering how the city of her birth has changed
Beyond all recognition. I too remember the old Dublin…..and I avoid the new one as much as possible.

7. Joe Hill
The story of a Swedish immigrant to the USA who was a Union activist.
He was accused of a double assassination, and executed by firing squad in 1915.
It was said that he didn't speak in his own defense because he was in the arms
of a married woman at the time of the crime, and did not want to betray her.

8. Holy Ground
Ah yes…..the timeless tale of sailors saying farewell to the ladies of the "Holy Ground",
which was the red light district in Cobh (Queenstown) County Cork, an International sea port.

9. The Town I Loved So Well
This is a heartbreaking song about the town of Derry in Northern Ireland.
It tells how war and sectarian violence can tear apart a lovely old town with a sad history.
My Parish Priest is from Derry, and this always brings a tear to his eyes.

10. Go Lassie Go:
This is not an old song.
It was written in 1957 by Francis McPeake from Belfast.
He dedicated it to his first wife, who died. His son of the same name is a well known Uilleann piper.

11. The Rising Of The Moon
This was always requested at Clancy Brothers concerts, and got a great reception from the audience.
It is one of the most famous Rebel Songs of all time. It tells the story of the ill-fated Rebellion of 1798.
The song was supposed to inspire the men preparing for the equally ill-fated Rebellion of 1867.
If only the men of Ireland had the Second Amendment, instead of arming themselves with pikes and farming tools,
 there may have been a different outcome, but we would not have these great songs.

12. Green Fields Of France
A sad anti-war song, about a young 19-year old Irishman killed in the first World War
fighting for the British, while other young Irishmen fought the British at home.

13. Red Is The Rose: is a simple song of love and loss.

14. As I Roved Out
is the tale of a man who meets a pretty 17-year old gypsy girl,
ruins her reputation and upsets her family. Then he utters that old line
"Sorry darlin' I'm already married and not about to leave my wife".
She should have listened to her mother!

15. Dirty Old Town
This is not an Irish song, but has been recorded by Irish groups.
It is about Salford, near Manchester in England, which is indeed a dirty old town.

16. Leaving Of Liverpool
This is self-explanatory. This young man has signed onto the crew of a transatlantic sailing ship,
and is saying goodbye to his darling.
No doubt he found another love when he got to California.

I absolutely love this tracklist. I'm only not wild about the High Kings redention of Fields of Athenry, it seems to miss power. But that's personal of course. Love the lads and looking foreward for this album  ;D

I just recently bought the first two CDs from the High Kings, so of course several of the songs on this new live CD are already on them, but this one sounds good too! Thanks Maggie, for the song information.  My mother fell in love with "The Holy Ground" many years ago after my aunt played it for her on a Clancy Brothers record she picked up in Ireland, so I'm familiar with the song.  But I must confess, I never realized that the "Holy Ground" was a red light district!
