Have you heard either the original by Leonard Cohen or the version done by Jeff Buckley? I prefer both of those to the Rufus Wainwright version, but maybe that's just me. The Jeff Buckley version gets played on tv shows when they need some melancholy music, sometimes. Chris

Chris,
I heard Jeff Buckley's...but his version was more like....full....I don't know....I like how with Rufus it's just him and his piano...so it gives it more of that haunting feeling...as apposed to a choir singing the chorus...and all this instrumentation...all though this insrmentation was simple....
but it's such a simple song...and when you have all this instrumentation the meaning and references in the song just get lost...which I think is why I prefer Rufus...
I do like the originals though....I love all the biblical references...it's just so amazing how Jeff Buckly (he was the writer correct?)...placed all the references...and how the chords that he mentions in the beginning fit in so perectly...I love it...I get chills evertime I listen that song....

Leonard Cohen was the original writer and performer. He wrote the lyrics but the lyrics used by Buckley and Wainwright are alternate lyrics. The lyrics Leonard Cohen put on his album are more explicitly religious in tone with the heartbreak of love part of it being more of a side note. I highly recommend the Leonard Cohen versions of Hallelujah and If it Be Your Will, as they are two of the most extraordinary religious themed songs I've ever heard. Some people don't like his voice but I think his voice fits the music perfectly. He's not a technical singer, he's an emotion singer. I think part of the reason I prefer Jeff Buckley's to Rufus Wainwright's is the fact that a) it was played at Janine's memorial service and b) I'm not that big a fan of Rufus Wainwright's voice.
